가브리엘 고아원, 살렘 고아원 아이들이 다녀갔습니다.

The children from Gabriel Orphanage and Salem Orphanage came to visit today.

오늘(7월 8일)은 아침 일찍부터 아이들을 맞을 준비를 했습니다. 오전 9시부터 스탭 청년들이 왔는데, 오늘 일찍 오기로 한 가브리엘 고아원이 길이 막혀 11시에나 도착을 했습니다. 18명의 아이가 와서 먼저 신체검사를 하고, 특별히 아픈 아이는 없는지 살폈습니다.

여자아이 중에 17살의 조 알티마가 가슴 부분이 기형으로 보여서 소피아가 자세히 검진했습니다. 가슴에 혹처럼 만져지고, 양쪽 가슴이 너무 차이가 나서, 급하게 병원에 가라고 원장 가브리엘에게 이야기했습니다.

신체검사가 다 끝나고, 점심을 먹고, 식량을 전달하고, 아이들에게 선물 백팩을 하나씩 주어서 보냈습니다. 원장 가브리엘도 이제는 나이가 많이 들었습니다. 15년 전, 아이티 대지진 때 고아원 문을 열어, 그때부터 지금까지 데리고 있는 아이(청년)도 여럿입니다.

살렘 고아원은 길이 너무 막혀 12시 30분이 넘어서 왔습니다. 44명의 아이가 탑탑 2대에 나누어 타고, 갱들이 막아선 거리를 지나, 꽉 막힌 길에서 긴 시간을 보내고 온 것입니다.

살렘 고아원 아이들은 오자마자 식사를 하고, 신체검사를 했습니다. 아이들 치아에 불소를 발라주고, 선물을 나누어주고 식량과 지원금을 전달했습니다.

살렘 고아원 원장 쟌 목사는 우리 친구입니다. 17년 전, 우리가 처음으로 고아원 사역을 소명으로 받은 곳이 살렘 고아원이었습니다. 이후 17년 동안 우리는 아마도 80번쯤 만났을 것입니다. 이제 서로 같이 나이가 들어가면서 늘 안부를 궁금해하고 있는데, 쟌 목사가 아픕니다.

그는 기침하면 각혈을 해서, 폐 질환이 의심되는데도 병원에 가지 못하고 있습니다. 우선 고아원 인근에는 모든 병원이 문을 닫았습니다. 시내 전체에 그나마 갈만한 병원이 두 군데 있지만, 가는 길도 위험하고, 돈도 많이 들 것 같아 못 간다고 했습니다.

돈 걱정하지 말고 병원에 꼭 가라고 했지만, 어두운 낯에 간신히 웃으며 고개만 끄덕였습니다. 차를 태워 보내며 마음이 언짢았습니다. 마음 놓고 오가지도 못하는 곳에서 언제 또 만날지 모르는데, 건강을 심각하게 걱정해야 할 처지가 되었습니다. 오래도록 건강하기를 기도하고 또 기도했습니다.

내일 오아시스 고아원 아이들이 오면, 아이들 만나는 일정은 대략 마무리됩니다. 대신 내일은 일라봐 36가 러브고아원 살라 원장 내외를 불렀습니다. 장애 고아원은 아이들이 올 수 없는데, 우리도 위험해서 가보지 않기로 했습니다. 새로 후원을 시작한 파코(Pacot) 고아원은 아직 아이들이 올 수 있는지 연락이 없습니다.

금요일에는 브니엘 고아원의 쇼손이 올지 모릅니다. 도로가 안전하면 오겠다는 연락만 받았습니다. 쇼손은 우리도, 탁 선교사님께서도 많이 보고싶어하시는 두 발에 장애를 가진 아이입니다. 아이가 총명하고 지혜로워 탁 선교사님께서 많이 도와주시며 관심을 가져주셨던 아이인데 오랬동안 보지 못했습니다.

하나님께서 남은 일정도 아이티 아이들을 위한 잔치의 시간이 될 수 있도록 인도하시길 기도합니다. 우리의 오랜 친구 쟌 목사의 건강을 위해 기도를 부탁드립니다. 우리의 안전과 아이티를 위해, 아이들을 위해 계속 기도를 부탁드립니다.

Today (July 8), we began preparing early in the morning to welcome the children. Staff members began arriving at 9 a.m., but Gabriel Orphanage, which was scheduled to come early, was delayed due to traffic and didn't arrive until 11 a.m. Eighteen children came. We started with medical checkups and made sure there were no children in serious condition.

Among the girls, 17-year-old Jo Altima appeared to have a chest deformity. Sophia examined her closely and found a lump-like mass and an abnormal size difference between both sides of her chest. We urgently advised Director Gabriel to take her to the hospital.

After all the checkups were completed, the children had lunch, received food supplies, and each one was given a gift backpack before heading back. Director Gabriel is now quite elderly. He opened the orphanage 15 years ago during the Haiti earthquake and has been raising several children (now young adults) ever since.

Salem Orphanage arrived past 12:30 p.m. due to severe traffic. Forty-four children came, split into two tap-taps. They had to pass through streets blocked by gangs and endured a long, exhausting trip through jammed roads.

As soon as the Salem children arrived, they had lunch and underwent medical checkups. We applied fluoride to their teeth, handed out gifts, and provided food and financial support.

     Pastor Jean, director of Salem Orphanage, is our friend. Seventeen years ago, Salem was the first orphanage where we felt called to begin our ministry. Since then, we’ve likely met over 80 times. Now, as we grow older together, we always check in on each other. But Pastor Jean is unwell.

He is coughing up blood, which suggests a lung condition, yet he hasn’t been able to go to the hospital. All the hospitals near the orphanage are closed. There are only two usable hospitals in the city, but the roads are dangerous, and the cost is too high, so he hasn’t gone.

     We told him not to worry about the cost and to please go to the hospital, but he only nodded slightly with a faint smile on his weary face. As we sent him off in the car, we felt uneasy. We don’t know when we’ll see each other again, as traveling is not safe, and now we must seriously worry about his health. We prayed and prayed again that he would stay healthy for a long time.

     Tomorrow, when the children from Oasis Orphanage visit, our schedule of meeting the children will mostly be wrapped up. Instead, we have invited Director Sala and his wife from Love Orphanage in Lilavois 36. Since the disabled children at their orphanage can’t travel, and the area is too dangerous for us to visit, we decided not to go. We haven’t yet heard whether the children from Pacot Orphanage, which we just started supporting, will be able to come.

     On Friday, Sonson from the Peniel Orphanage may come. We only received a message saying that he would come if the roads are safe. Sonson is a child with a disability in both legs, whom both we and Missionary Tak have dearly missed. He is a bright and wise child, and Missionary Tak had taken special interest in him and supported him in many ways. But we haven’t seen him for a long time.

     We pray that God will guide the remaining schedule to be a joyful celebration for the children of Haiti. Please pray especially for the health of our longtime friend, Pastor Jean. We ask for your continued prayers for our safety, for Haiti, and for the children.
