<Haiti> 동네 잔치 / A Day of Giving

베다니 마을과 영생교회 성도들과 함께 잔치했습니다.

오늘(7월 6일)은 주일예배 후에 베다니마을과 영생교회 성도 45가구에게 구호품을 지급했습니다. 아이티에서 가장 열악하다는 시티 솔레에서 갈 곳도 없고, 집을 지켜야 해서 갱단의 폭력을 견디며 살아가는 사람들입니다. 더구나 지난 두 달 동안 내린 비로 대부분의 마을이 침수된 상황입니다.

주일예배 후 45가구별로 한 사람씩 소나피에 모였습니다. 영생교회 장 끌로 목사가 인원을 점검하고, 서로 인사하고, 구호품을 나누었습니다.

쌀과 옥수수는 큰 봉투로 하나씩, 콩과 설탕은 작은 봉투로 하나씩, 거기에 생선통조림을 넣었습니다. 대략 시장에서 사려면 5천 굴드(약38불)쯤 줘야하는 양입니다. 그리고 가구당 2천굴드(약15불)씩 현금 지급을 했습니다.

현지인들의 보통 임금이 하루 700굴드입니다. 미화로 약 5불이 조금 넘습니다. 이런 형편에 아무 일도 할 수 없는 대부분의 사람들이 오늘 받은 식량과 지원금은 평소 보기 어려운 지원입니다.

많은 사람이 마을에서 나오니까, 갱들이 뭔가 있는 줄 알고, 나갔다 들어올 때 통행세 5천 굴드를 내라고 했답니다. 탁 선교사님께서 통행세와 땁땁 비용을 주셨습니다.

꿋꿋하게 갱의 횡포를 견디며 살고 있는 이들이 지친 얼굴로 왔다가, 하나님을 찬양하며 밝은 얼굴로 돌아갔습니다. 저희도 슬프지만 감사한 시간이었습니다. 이런 지원이 가능하도록 도와주시고, 이곳에 올 수 있도록 응원해주신 여러분께 감사드립니다.

We had a joyful gathering with the residents of Bethany Village and members of Youngsaeng Church.

     Today (July 6), after Sunday worship, we distributed relief supplies to 45 households from Bethany Village and Youngsaeng  Church. These are people who live in one of the most impoverished areas of Haiti—Cité Solei. With nowhere else to go, they endure gang violence just to stay and protect their homes. On top of that, most of their village has been flooded due to heavy rains over the past two months.

After the Sunday service, one representative from each of the 45 households gathered at Sonapi. Pastor Jean Claude of Youngsaeng  Church checked attendance, greeted everyone, and oversaw the distribution of supplies.

     Each household received one large bag of rice and cornmeal, a small bag of beans and sugar, and canned fish. The total value of the goods is approximately 5,000 gourdes (around $38) if purchased at a local market. In addition, each family was given 2,000 gourdes (about $15) in cash.

     The average daily wage for a local worker is about 700 gourdes, which is just over $5. In these difficult circumstances, most people have no means of earning income, so today’s food and financial assistance were a rare and significant support.

     When so many people left the village, the gangs assumed something was happening. As they returned, the gangs demanded a 5,000-gourde “toll” for passage. Missionary Tak generously covered both the toll fees and the transportation costs (tap-tap fare).

     Those who live steadfastly under the tyranny of gang violence came to us with weary faces, but returned home with bright smiles, praising God. Though it was a heartbreaking experience, we are deeply grateful for this time.
