<Haiti> 청년이 된 쇼손 / Sonson, Now a Young Man

6년만에, 청년이 된 쇼손을 만났습니다.

We met Sonson again after six years—now grown into a young man.

쇼손은 브니엘 고아원에 사는 아이입니다. 2010년 아이티 대지진 나던 해에 아주 어린 아이로 만났습니다. 쇼손은 별명으로 불리었고, 본명은 자넬슨 루이스(Janelson Louis)입니다. 올해 19살이 되었습니다. 오른쪽 다리는 허벅지부터, 왼쪽은 발목 아래가 없습니다.

브니엘 고아원은 갱들 때문에 길이 막혀 자유롭게 다니지 못하는 도미니카 국경 근처 마을에 있습니다. 이번에 오면서 아이를 너무 보고 싶었습니다. 특별히 제 아내가 쇼손을 너무 이뻐했고, 보고 싶어 해서 무리한 줄 알지만, 혹시 올 수 있는지 고아원에 물어보았습니다. 길이 좀 안전한 날을 찾아보겠다는 답을 듣고 기다렸습니다.

그리고 목요일(7월 10일) 아침 10시까지 오겠다는 답을 받았습니다. 탁 선교사님께서도 쇼손을 너무 이뻐하시고, 쇼손이 어려서 목발을 맞춰주기 위해 오래 애쓰셨던 터라 아이를 많이 보고 싶어하셨는데 쇼손이 온다는 소식을 들으시고 기쁨을 감추지 못하셨습니다.

아침 9시 30분에 도착한 아이는 정말 청년이 되어서 왔습니다. 새벽 6시에 출발해서 여러 차례 땁땁을 갈아타고 왔다고 했습니다. 눈물이 날 정도로 서로 반가워했습니다. 아이는 정말 선하고 씩씩하게 잘 자랐습니다.

월요일(14일)에 고등학교 졸업 국가 시험을 치른다고 했습니다. 자신 있느냐고 물으니까 ‘예스’라고 힘있게 대답했습니다. 대학에서 뭘 공부하고 싶냐고 물었더니, 의학공부를 해서 의사가 되고 싶답니다. 탁 선교사님께서 학비를 대시겠다고 했습니다.

갱이 점령한 길을 돌아가야 해서, 우리 만남은 30분 남짓 되었습니다. 그 사이에 탁 선교사님께서 새 신발도 주시고, 서로 격려하며 기도했습니다.

그래도 보고 싶은 얼굴을 보고, 씩씩하게 잘 자란 모습을 보고 나니, 마음이 한편으로는 찡하면서도 참 기쁘고 감사했습니다.

여전히 목발을 짚고, 그래도 청년처럼 씩씩하게 걸어가는 뒷모습을 오래오래 지켜 보면서, 아이를 이만큼 키워주신 하나님의 은혜에 감사했습니다. 그동안 우리 사랑이 헛되지 않았음을 감사했습니다. 아이를 위해 오래도록 여러 가지로 애써주시는 탁 선교사님과 로사 선교사님께 깊이 깊이 감사했습니다.

도와주시고 기도해주신 모든 분들께도 감사드립니다.

Sonson is a child who lives at the Peniel Orphanage. We first met him as a very young boy in 2010, the year of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. “Sonson” is his nickname; his full name is Janelson Louis. This year, he turned 19. He has no right leg from the thigh down, and his left leg is missing below the ankle.

     Peniel Orphanage is located near the Dominican border, in a village where gang activity has made the roads unsafe and travel difficult. Before this trip, I longed to see him again. My wife especially loves Sonson dearly and missed him so much. Even though it might have been a stretch, we asked the orphanage if there was any way he could come. They replied that they would try to find a day when the roads were somewhat safe.

     Finally, we received a message saying he would arrive on Thursday morning (July 10) by 10 a.m. Missionary Tak, who has also always loved Sonson, was especially delighted. When Sonson was younger, Missionary Tak spent a long time helping him get fitted for crutches. Upon hearing that Sonson was coming, he couldn’t hide his joy.

     Sonson arrived at 9:30 a.m.—and he had truly grown into a young man. He had left at 6 a.m. and transferred between several tap-taps (shared taxis) to get here. We were so happy to see each other again that it brought tears to our eyes. He has grown up to be a kind, strong, and upright young man.

     He told us that he would be taking his national high school graduation exam on Monday, the 14th. When I asked if he felt confident, he answered firmly, “Yes!” I asked him what he wants to study in college, and he said he wants to study medicine and become a doctor. Missionary Tak graciously offered to support his tuition.

     Because he had to take a detour around gang-controlled roads, our time together lasted only about 30 minutes. During that short time, Missionary Tak gave him a new pair of shoes, and we encouraged one another and prayed together.

     But just being able to see his face, and seeing how well he has grown, filled us with both a deep sense of emotion and joy.

     As we watched him walk away on his crutches—walking strongly like a young man—we gave thanks to God for the grace that has brought him this far. We were also deeply grateful that our love for him over the years had not been in vain. We sincerely thank Missionaries Tak and Rosa for their faithful support and care for Sonson over the years.

 We are also truly grateful to everyone who has supported and prayed for us.
